Student Information

Literacy Volunteers uses trained volunteers to provide free instruction to individuals who live or work in Morris County.

Due to our limited resources, we are unable to assist everyone. We cannot accept anyone under the age of 18 or individuals here for a limited amount of time (under two years) which include people here on vacation, on work assignments or au pairs.

Tutors and students must meet in a public place such as a library or coffee shop or utilize distance learning technology (Zoom, Google Meeting, FaceTime). Matches will be made based on tutor and student preferences for times, days, and locations.  Once the initial match is made, tutors will be asked to arrange a meeting place and time. LVMC will be a happy to make recommendations for meeting places in your area.

Both you and your tutor will not always be available – that is to be expected. Our goal is for our students and tutors to meet regularly for one year. However, we do recognize that vacations, illnesses, and other obligations may get in the way. Some tutors and students chose to have extra homework or to email during extended absences. Please let LVMC staff know about your schedule in advance so that we can match you with a tutor with flexibility.

Your tutor will discuss with you their expectations for punctuality and communication. If necessary, ask your tutor to shift times to accommodate work schedules or traffic. Please make sure that your tutor provides you with their contact information, so that you are able to call you if you are going to be late or missing a class. We also ask that you provide your tutor with your contact information as well, so that they are able to reach out to you when class is cancelled or needs to be rescheduled.

Many of our tutors and students choose to work together beyond one year. The one year mark gives tutors and students the opportunity to evaluate whether or not they wish to continue with the tutoring program. Please speak with our staff if you have specific questions about continuing or terminating your match.

We recommend that our tutors give our students some type of practice opportunity at home in between sessions. This could be a small writing or speaking assignment that reinforces concepts discussed in your tutoring hour. Tutors with students preparing for high school equivalency test or entrance exams may assign an essay or math pages as this will be expected of them in their future endeavors.

Student Expectations

Your assigned tutor is a volunteer. He or she may end tutoring at any time.

When face-to-face tutoring, you must meet in public place such as a library or coffee shop. Home tutoring is NOT permitted.

When remote tutoring, choose a place that is quiet  and without distractions or noise. Other family members may not participate unless also  registered as a student. Practice using the video chat service several times before your first class. Make sure you know  how to use the video chat app (Zoom, Google Meet, FaceTime etc.).

Attend class regularly and be on time. With 3 unexcused absences, a student will be dropped from the LVMC program.

Contact your tutor at least 1 hour before class if you expect to be late or miss class.

Please call sooner if you know you will be absent.

Call the tutor or the LVMC office if your address, phone number, email, or other personal information changes.

Call LVMC if you must stop participating in the program for any reason (for example, new job, moving from area, childcare, or extended vacation).

Students should show respect to their tutor and fellow classmates. I agree that I will not:

  • Use offensive behavior or offensive language
  • Be under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs
  • Possess a weapon, or use threatening behavior
  • Disregard personal hygiene (body odor, dental hygiene, too much perfume, smoking, etc.)

LVMC may ask to use my photographic or video image for informational, promotional and/or fundraising materials, both printed and digital  including on social media.  I may assent verbally, and also have the right to refuse permission to use my image.  If I give permission, I hereby relinquish and grant to LVMS all rights, title and interest in these images, and agree that LVMC has the right to edit them without restriction.   I waive any right to inspect or approve the finish product.
