Become a Student

Welcome!

Literacy Volunteers of Morris County (LVMC) helps adults in Morris County, New Jersey improve their ability to read, write or speak English.  We are a FREE program.

To become a student you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Live or work in Morris County
  • Plan to live in the U.S.A. permanently or for two or more years

Programs Offered:

  • English as a Second Language (ESL)
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Basic Math Skills
  • High School Equivalency Preparation (GED, TASC, HiSet)
  • Citizenship Preparation

How long is the tutoring session?

Tutoring is typically one hour, one time per week.

Where is the tutoring?

Student can choose to be tutored in-person at a public location such as a library or coffee shop.  Or students can choose a remote tutoring option such as Zoom, FaceTime, or Skype. We will do our best to accommodate preferences.

COVID-19 Policy:   Remote tutoring is still recommended for tutoring, but tutors and students may meet in person if  both parties feel comfortable doing so.  All state laws and rules of the tutoring location must be followed.   And if either the student or tutor prefer to wear masks, this choice must be respected.

Student Rules & Agreement

MEETINGS  

When remote tutoring, choose a place that is quiet  and without distractions or noise. Other family members may not participate unless also  registered as a student. Practice using the video chat service several times before your first class. Make sure you know  how to use the video chat app (Zoom, Google Meet, FaceTime etc.).

When face-to-face tutoring, you must meet in public place such as a library or coffee shop. Home tutoring is NOT permitted. 

Your assigned tutor is a volunteer. He or she may end tutoring at any time.   

ATTENDANCE 

Attend class regularly and be on time. With 3 unexcused absences, a student will be dropped from the LVMC program.  

Contact your tutor at least 1 hour before class if you expect to be late or miss class.  

Please call sooner if you know you will be absent. 

CLASS TIME 

Show respect to my tutor and remember they are a volunteer who is donating their time to help you.

Complete any homework that a tutor assigns. (Homework will help you retain class material.) 

Meetings are between the student and tutor. Try to find a quiet place to meet remotely and minimize interruptions.  

COMMUNICATION 

Call the tutor or the LVMC office if your address, phone number, email, or other personal information changes.   

Call LVMC if you must stop participating in the program for any reason (for example, new job, moving from area, childcare, or extended vacation).
